How to store and care for your records

How you store and handle records decides how long they last — and how much they stay worth. Most of the wear that drags a record down a grade is avoidable: heat, damp, sunlight, dust and careless handling. A few simple habits keep a collection clean, playable and valuable for decades.

Store records upright — never stacked

Always shelve records vertically, like books, with the discs standing on edge. Stacking them flat puts the full weight of the pile on the bottom records and is the fastest way to warp vinyl and crush sleeves into ring wear.

Pack them snugly enough that they stand straight without leaning, but not so tight that you have to fight to pull one out — pressure and friction both cause damage. Avoid leaning a row at an angle for long periods, which slowly bends the discs.

Keep them cool, dark and dry

Heat is vinyl’s enemy: even a warm car or a spot above a radiator can warp a record permanently. Keep them at normal room temperature, away from heat sources and direct sunlight, which also fades printed sleeves.

Damp is just as harmful to the cardboard — it invites mold and the brown spotting collectors call foxing. A stable, dry room at moderate humidity is ideal; basements and attics that swing between damp and hot are the worst place to keep a collection.

Handle by the edges, and sleeve properly

Hold a record by its outer edge and the label only. Fingerprints leave oils that attract dust and end up as pops and crackle, so keep fingers off the grooves.

Swap brittle or paper inner sleeves for anti-static, poly-lined ones to protect the playing surface, and add an outer plastic sleeve to guard the cover. The sleeve is graded and valued separately from the disc, so protecting it protects real value.

Clean carefully — and never with household cleaners

Give a record a quick pass with a carbon-fiber brush before each play to lift loose dust. For a deeper clean, use a proper record-cleaning fluid (and ideally a cleaning machine), working with the grooves, not across them.

Never reach for household cleaning sprays, alcohol on shellac 78s, or paper towels — they can strip finishes and leave fine scratches. When in doubt, less is more: a clean, dust-free record both sounds better and grades higher.

How Kollektion helps

Kollektion records the condition of every copy you own and tracks it over time, so you can see at a glance which records are your most valuable — and therefore most worth protecting. Storage locations and printable QR labels help you organize shelves and boxes and find any record fast, without pulling the collection apart.
